Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia M. Burwell and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced a new set of sodium recommendations in its 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines. The new guidelines encourage Americans to consume less than 2,300 milligrams (mg) per day of sodium for people over the age of 14 years and less for those younger. Currently, Americans consumer 50 percent more than this recommendation.
The nutritional guidelines encourage Americans to adopt a series of science-based recommendations to improve how they eat to reduce obesity and prevent chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. For more information, visit HHS.gov or FDA.gov for their announcements.
