The Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC) has awarded its prestigious Spirit of the Heart Award to the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (National Forum) for its “pivotal role in creating a supportive community dedicated to cardiovascular health.”
Warren A. Jones, MD, immediate past chair of the National Forum, accepted the award.
Co-founded in 2002 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Heart Association, and the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, the National Forum fosters collaboration between public, private, and nonprofit organizations to improve cardiovascular health nationally. The National Forum’s mission is to spark and lead collaborative action to optimize cardiovascular health and well-being throughout the lifespan.
“We are deeply humbled to receive this recognition from the Association of Black Cardiologists,” said John M. Clymer, executive director of the National Forum. “This award reflects the power of collaboration and the commitment we share with our partners to give everyone a fair opportunity to attain health.”
The National Forum and ABC have collaborated on many initiatives, including the:
- Know Your Numbers social media campaign that urges individuals to stay current on their healthcare visits and know their blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose levels
- Value & Access Collaborative, which has resulted in 32 states enacting 75 policies that expand people’s access to healthcare
- Value & Innovation Forum briefings on timely issues
- Move with the Mayor® initiative that mobilizes mayors to build trust in medicine and public health. It also empowers people to take action to prevent cardiovascular disease risk factors
- Million Hearts® Collaboration, which advances the goals and strategies of the national initiative to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes
These initiatives are making a positive difference for real people in underserved communities.
