The National Forum for Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention joined organizations representing consumers, patients, clinicians, public health leaders, employers, and healthcare payers in urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve nonprescription, low-dose rosuvastatin (Crestor 5 mg), together with the proposed additional conditions for nonprescription use.
The letter highlights the role of high LDL cholesterol in cardiovascular disease and notes that many adults who could benefit from statin therapy do not receive it. A nonprescription option, supported by clear Drug Facts labeling and an interactive patient questionnaire, could give appropriate adults another way to access preventive treatment and help reduce time and cost barriers to care.
The signatories urge FDA to approve the pending application, promote consumer education on safe use and when to seek clinical guidance, and support labeling and distribution that facilitate access and affordability. Prescription options and clinician oversight would remain essential for many patients.
