Value and Access Collaborative (VAC) Recommends Congress Reform PBM Practices
The National Forum highlights the VAC’s recommendations as Congress considers legislation to regulate PBMs.
In letters to House Oversight and Accountability Committee leaders, who met Tuesday to markup one such bill, National Forum executive director John Clymer described some PBMs’ prior authorization requirements and practices as “onerous and confusing for consumers and clinicians.”
Additionally, some requirements don’t align with current clinical guidelines.
Some PBMs’ fee structures result in pharmacies receiving reimbursement below the costs of acquiring drugs, jeopardizing the sustainability of community pharmacies.
This “undermines access to care for people in places with limited numbers of pharmacies, such as rural areas,” the VAC stated.
The letter advances consensus policy recommendations signed by 21 VAC members and allies, including patients, providers, payers, and public health organizations. Click here to read the letter to Congress.
