MWTM Spring Newsletter

April 26th, 2023

The MWTM Spring Physical Activity Challenge is off to a great start! Please let us know if you’ve got your event(s) set up for the spring!

To help you launch your Spring Challenge, we are partnering with Live to the Beat!

The “Live to the Beat” campaign is led by CDC Foundation to help fuel the Million Hearts® Initiative toward a goal of preventing one million heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular events. The campaign aims to reduce cardiovascular disease risk among Black adults ages 35–54 with a focus on primary prevention, including moving more, eating better, quitting smoking and addressing key risk factors like hypertension, high cholesterol and high blood sugar. The campaign focus is to empower the Black community with a steady beat of culturally-relevant healthy habits, tips and routines.  The campaign’s core message to audiences nationwide is: “No matter where you’re from or where you’re at, you can achieve a healthier life. To the beat of your own drum. And, to the beat of your own heart.” To learn more about the “Live to the Beat” and steps to take for healthier living, visit LivetoTheBeat.org.

Here’s a partnership communications toolkit that includes co-branded social media images and videos on fitting workouts into a busy schedule.

According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, only 11 minutes of moderate physical activity daily may lower a person’s risk of premature death.

Anyone can fit in 11 minutes. Run, hike, or play a quick pickleball match to get in your 11 minutes and improve your health! #MovewiththeMayor

The benefits of physical activity don’t stop there. There are also economic benefits to investing in parks and infrastructure intervention, including improved physical activity and mental health. City Highlights

Shoutout to Mayor Bagwell of Carson City, NV for hosting a pickleball game; Warm welcome to Mayor Ledezma for his first MWTM event with San Jacinto, CA; We’re impressed by Mayor Hart for floating at aerial yoga in Waterloo, IA; and Mayor Muryn for hosting 419 Day with a walk around Findlay, OH!

If you would like to be highlighted, please remember to use the hashtag #MovewiththeMayor or email me about your event/partnerships and your photos.

Partnerships

Kudos to Mayor Norton of Rochester, MN for partnering with the Med City Marathon!

Partnerships help elevate the impact of the Challenge. MWTM City, Akron, OH, has a 60-year legacy of ensuring that people can move safely from place to place, no matter their mode of transportation. Check out this case study featuring Mayor Horrigan for recommendations that you can adapt within your city! https://bit.ly/NFAOCS

We are absolutely impressed by the amount of activity your cities are doing already, and we can’t wait to see how your communities are moving!
